In 1905, the Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon, divides Bengal in two administrative units, one Hindu, the other Muslim. In his home, Nikhil dreams of his country's independence. He encourages his wife Bimala to give up the traditional way of life, to get an education from an English governess, and meet his friends, including Sandip. Bimala is at first charmed by the nationalist leader and his liberal ideas, but when she discovers the true nature of the man, she goes back to her husband.
