In May 1789, two young women take the veil under the Carmelite order at Compiègne. One of the young novices, Blanche seems obsessed by a fear of death. The convent is soon threatened by the revolutionaries. The despoiled, hunted Carmelites vow to become martyrs. They are arrested and sentenced to death. Ruled by her dread of death, Sister Blanche flees. But on the day of the nuns' execution, she overcomes her fears and resolutely joins her Sisters on the scaffold.
