In 1880 in Meu, a prisoner, Remi Bonvent, a talented composer, falls in love with Marie-Doree Porey-Cave, daughter of the tyrannical head warden. She becomes his muse and inspires him to write an opera entitled "The Four-Poster Bed". The head warden claims to be the author of the work which is a great success.
