During the Barbarian siege of Carthage, Salammbô, the sacred priestess of the goddess Tanit, has an affair with Mathô, the chief of the mercenaries. The Carthaginians hunt and catch Mathô and then torture him in front of Salammbô, who lets herself die. Based on Gustave Flaubert' novel.
