Sergio, a pathetic rather than loathsome petty crook is hired by two gangsters to hold up a gray Fiat conveying a huge amount of money. After a mess-up, Sergio carjacks a professor with a load of guinea pigs and gets bitten by a rat. After betraying Sergio, his accomplices leave him holding the bag, the police in hot pursuit. Infected by the plague virus, Sergio goes back to Rome at the risk of contaminating the entire city.
